Nigeria Calls for Practical Support from UN in Fight Against Terrorism
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu urges the United Nations to provide more practical support in Nigeria's fight against terrorism. Tinubu highlights the ripple effect of terrorism on global peace, displacements, and rising poverty. A Counter-Terrorism Summit, driven by African nations, is planned for 2024 in Abuja. Nigeria's efforts in combating terrorism have been praised but more assistance is needed.

ABUJA, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has called on the United Nations to be more practical in supporting Nigeria in the fight against terrorism, in view of the rippling effect on global peace, displacements of people, and rising poverty.

Terrorism has consistently reversed the gains on development and increased instability in families and communities, Tinubu emphasized during an audience with Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism Vladimir Voronkov in Abuja on Thursday.

Voronkov, while commending Nigeria's contribution to the global fight against terrorism, acknowledged that the country already had a framework for prevention, mitigation, and reconciliation in place.

It was revealed during the meeting that the UN is planning a Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja to be held in April 2024. This summit will be largely driven by African nations with an African agenda, as Voronkov explained.

Nigeria has long been plagued by terrorist groups, such as Boko Haram, which pose a significant threat to its stability and security. Since assuming office in May, Tinubu has made fighting terrorism a top priority for his government.

A report released by the United Nations Development Programme in February highlighted that sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, has become the global epicenter of violent extremism. Shockingly, nearly half of the world's recorded deaths from terrorism in 2021 originated from this region.

The call for increased practical support from the United Nations in Nigeria's fight against terrorism comes at a critical time when the country is grappling with the devastating effects on its people and communities. The ripple effect of terrorism on global peace cannot be understated, as it has led to widespread displacements, increased poverty, and hampered social and economic development.

A practical approach to addressing terrorism should involve enhancing intelligence sharing, strengthening border security, and providing resources for counter-terrorism initiatives. Nigeria's efforts should be complemented and supported with international partnerships to effectively combat the menace of terrorism.

The planned Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja indicates Africa's commitment to tackling the issue head-on in its own region. By taking ownership and driving an African agenda, the summit aims to foster collaboration and cooperation among African nations in their fight against terrorism.

Tinubu's call for more practical support from the United Nations is not only a plea for assistance but also a recognition of the interconnectedness and global impact of terrorism. With Nigeria at the forefront of the battle against terrorism, it is crucial that the international community steps up its support and provides tangible assistance towards eradicating this menace.

Nigeria's determination to combat terrorism is commendable, and the nation's efforts have been recognized by the international community. However, the fight against terrorism requires a united front, with practical support and collaboration from the United Nations and other nations worldwide.

As the planned Counter-Terrorism Summit approaches in 2024, it presents a unique opportunity for African nations to strategize, share best practices, and garner the support necessary to effectively combat terrorism. By joining forces, Nigeria, the United Nations, and African nations can work towards restoring peace, stability, and prosperity to the region and the global community as a whole.
