EDSIEC declares PDP as Winners in Edo State Local Government Election
The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has declared the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winners of all the chairmanship positions in the 18 Local Government Areas of the state. However, the opposition parties claim that the election was marred by fraud and irregularities.

The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has announced the results of the local government council election held on Saturday, declaring the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winners of all the chairmanship positions in the 18 Local Government Areas of the state.

The returning officers from the 18 local government areas made the announcements at the EDSIEC headquarters in Benin City, where their documents were received by the chairman of EDSIEC, Justice James Oyomere (rtd). The chairman officially listed the 18 winners and commended the returning officers and adhoc staff for their performance during the election.

However, the opposition parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Labour Party (LP), have strongly criticized the election, labeling it as a sham and an affront to democracy.

David Imuse, the State chairman of the APC, expressed his dissatisfaction with the exercise in a phone interview, stating, "This election is a scam, it is a charade. They brought insufficient ballot papers but no single result sheet. How can you conduct an election when there is no result sheet?"

In a similar vein, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye, a chieftain of the LP, issued a statement claiming that the election was fraudulent and a rape of democracy. He expressed disappointment that a significant election, such as the local government election, can still be conducted in an uncivilized and barbaric manner. Okundaye called on EDSIEC to review and cancel the election due to the widespread fraud and electoral malpractices.

He added, "It is a known fact that members of the ruling PDP allegedly backed by external forces freely used dangerous weapons to scare Labour Party members from the field, carted away voting materials in some areas, and wrote results in some others. This again proved that the Labour Party has become a thorn in the flesh of other parties hence they are using all undemocratic means to deny the party victory as replicated in the Edo state government masterminded local government election."

In response, he urged members of the LP not to resort to lawlessness but to remain calm, highlighting the stark contrast between the democratic values of the LP and the alleged thuggery approach of the PDP.

This latest development has generated heated debates among political observers in Edo State. The credibility of the electoral process and the integrity of EDSIEC are being questioned. As citizens eagerly await further action from the electoral commission and political parties, the aftermath of this election will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the state's political landscape.

It remains to be seen whether EDSIEC will consider the opposition parties' call to review and cancel the election due to the alleged fraud and malpractices. The PDP, as the declared winners, now faces the challenge of gaining the trust and acceptance of the opposition parties, as well as the citizens who are skeptical of the election's legitimacy.
