Nigeria Imposes Sanctions on Supporters of Military Junta in Niger
Nigeria has taken a strong stance against the military junta in Niger by imposing sanctions on organizations, groups, and individuals who are identified as supporters of the coup. President Bola Tinubu, who also heads the ECOWAS, has ordered the sanctions through the Central Bank of Nigeria. The regional bloc, ECOWAS, has previously called for the junta to relinquish power and restore the elected president. The measures include financial and travel restrictions, as well as a proposed no-fly zone and asset freeze. Further decisions are to be taken at the upcoming ECOWAS summit.

Abuja, Nigeria - In a bid to address the political crisis unfolding in Niger, Nigeria has announced sanctions against organizations, groups, and individuals deemed to be supporters of the military junta. This development comes in the wake of a consensus among West African leaders on the dire situation in Niger.

Ajuri Ngelale, spokesperson for Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, revealed that the decision was made considering the existing consensus among West African leaders regarding the impasse in Niger.

President Tinubu, who also serves as the current chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), comprising 15 member states, has ordered the imposition of new sanctions through the Central Bank of Nigeria. These sanctions are targeted at groups and individuals involved in the coup in Niger, Ngelale explained.

Over a week ago, the regional bloc reached an agreement to impose sanctions on the military leaders in Niger who were implicated in the recent coup. The bloc maintained that the military junta in Niger must hand over power within a week, release and reinstate the elected President Mohamed Bazoum, failing which ECOWAS would take necessary measures to restore constitutional order, including the possible use of force.

ECOWAS member states have also agreed to impose financial and travel restrictions on the military leaders involved in the coup, propose an airspace ban over Niger, and freeze Niger's assets in the central and commercial banks of ECOWAS member countries.

Ngelale affirmed that "no options are off the table" when it comes to addressing the situation in Niger. He also mentioned that "far-reaching decisions" would be made at the ECOWAS summit on Thursday regarding the next steps to be taken by the regional bloc.

The presidential spokesperson stated that Tinubu had expanded consultations, both domestically and internationally, to analyze the various consequences and outcomes of the unfortunate situation in Niger.

The recent move by Nigeria to impose sanctions on supporters of the military junta in Niger demonstrates a firm commitment in the region to restore democratic governance and stability. As the ECOWAS summit approaches, the international community eagerly awaits the decisions that will shape the course of action in Niger.
