The Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) has stressed the significance of consolidating Geosciences education as a pivotal investment for the future of Nigeria. This investment is not just relevant to the nation's future, but also to the global stage, and is crucial for the infrastructural development of the economy. Mr Elliot Ibe, the President of NAPE, delivered these statements in his keynote address at the 11th NAPE and Nigerian Mining and the Geosciences Society (NMGS) Mini-Conference for students, hosted by the Department of Geosciences at the University of Lagos.
According to Mr Ibe, consolidating Geosciences education is not only vital for preparing graduates for the oil and gas industry, which significantly contributes to Nigeria's income, but also for addressing other critical areas such as mineral exploration and exploitation, solid mineral development, environmental issues, and renewable energy. This investment ensures that geoscientists are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to tackle emerging challenges brought about by shifting energy landscapes and rapid technological advancements.
Mr Ibe also emphasized the need to develop retooling strategies, not just for students, but also for the faculty. He believes that in order to achieve this, a clear roadmap with defined targets should be established within a specific timeframe. The responsibility for supporting these retooling efforts lies not only with the education commissions, but also requires a collective effort from academia and industry stakeholders.
Mr Philip Ajaebili, the NAPE University Assistance Programmes Chairman, highlighted the careful selection of the conference theme to inspire and generate interest among participants. The aim is to motivate the next generation of geoscientists and adequately equip them to handle the emerging challenges that demand geoscience expertise.
Addressing the concerns surrounding the geosciences curriculum, Prof. Akinade Olatunji, the President of the NMGS, expressed his reservations regarding the proposed curriculum by the National Universities Commission (NUC). He stated that the curriculum deviates from the core principles of geoscience training and introduces irrelevant courses that do not serve the best interests of the geoscience profession.
Consolidating Geosciences education in Nigeria is an investment that holds immense potential for the future of the nation. By equipping geoscientists with the necessary knowledge and skills, Nigeria can navigate the changing energy landscape, capitalize on emerging technologies, and drive sustainable economic development.
