Edo State Governor Launches Free Bus Service to Cushion Fuel Subsidy Removal Impact
The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has launched a free bus service to ease the burden of the fuel subsidy removal on the people of the state. The initiative, operated by the Edo City Transport Limited (ECTS), covers both intra-city and intercity routes, offering free transportation to residents. The governor's administration is committed to reducing hardship and supporting the welfare of the people, implementing various programs to alleviate the impact of the subsidy removal. The free bus service will be available for at least two months.

In a bid to alleviate the impact of the recent fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government, the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has flagged off a free bus service for passengers on all routes operated by the state-owned Edo City Transport Limited (ECTS). This initiative aims to cushion the effect of the removal on the people of the state and provide them with much-needed relief.

The free transport scheme will cover both intra-city and intercity routes, ensuring that residents can travel across various destinations within Edo State without incurring any transportation costs. Some of the intercity routes include Auchi - Igarra - Ibillo-Ososo, Uzebba-Ikhin - Otuo, and Abudu-Ubiaja, among others. Meanwhile, the intra-city routes will span different locations such as Ramat-Kingsquare, New Benin-Kingsquare, Kingsquare - Ekenwan Road, Kingsquare-Airport Road, Kingsquare-Sapele Road, and many more.

Representing Governor Obaseki during the launch ceremony, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, emphasized the administration's commitment to the general well-being of the people. He urged the residents of Edo State to make effective use of the free bus service, highlighting that it is one of many support programs initiated by the government to alleviate the challenges faced by the people due to the subsidy removal.

The free bus transportation scheme is certainly a timely intervention, considering the impact of the fuel subsidy removal on the cost of living. Edugie Agbonlahor, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Edo State Transport Authority, explained that transportation costs currently account for over 50% of an average worker's income. By offering free bus rides, the governor aims to release funds back to the people, thereby enabling them to address other pressing needs such as food, housing, and the expenses associated with the resumption of a new school term for students.

This initiative is not only welcomed by the residents but also by various individuals who recognize the potential for reducing the hardship caused by the fuel subsidy removal. One such individual is Mr. Ojekwua Kingsley, a Federal Civil Servant, who commended the governor for his thoughtful intervention. Mr. Kingsley expressed his hope for more palliatives from the state government, highlighting the positive impact they have on citizens.

The launch of this free bus service is undeniably a relief for many residents of Edo State, as it significantly reduces the financial burden of transportation. Passengers traveling to different destinations across the state have already benefited from this palliative measure. Mr. Edohor David, who was boarding a bus to Edo North, including destinations such as Auchi, Igarra, Ososo, and Ibilo, expressed his gratitude to the governor, emphasizing the positive impact of such initiatives on the livelihoods of the people.

This two-month initiative demonstrates the commitment of the Edo State Government to supporting its citizens and addressing their needs during this transitional period. By launching the free bus service, Governor Obaseki has showcased effective governance and a proactive approach to alleviating the impact of the fuel subsidy removal. The people of Edo State can now enjoy improved mobility and the financial respite provided by the government.
