Lagos State to Introduce HPV Vaccine to Prevent Cervical Cancer in Girls

Lagos State is taking a proactive step towards preventing cervical cancer among young girls. The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCD) has revealed its plan to introduce the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to combat the growing cases of cervical cancer in the country. This initiative is expected to start on September 25th.

Cervical cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer in women globally, and the second most common in Nigeria. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that over 14,000 Nigerian women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every year, with about 8,000 losing their lives to the disease. The introduction of the HPV vaccine aims to significantly reduce these numbers by targeting girls between the ages of 9 and 14, before they become sexually active.

Mrs. Clara Owojuyigbe, the Director of Health Education and Health Promotion Services of LSPHCD, emphasized the importance of this preventive measure. She urged parents, religious leaders, and community members to ensure that their daughters within the specified age range receive the HPV vaccination. The vaccine, known as Gardasil, provides lifelong immunity with just one dose.

Parents often overlook the importance of safeguarding their children against cervical cancer, as it is mainly associated with sexually transmitted infections. However, the HPV vaccine does not promote or encourage early sexual activity but rather serves as a preventive measure against future infection.

Notably, the government of Lagos State has taken the initiative to make the vaccine available for free during this period. This ensures that every eligible girl has access to this life-saving vaccine, regardless of their socio-economic background.

The first phase of the vaccination campaign will be carried out in 15 states across Nigeria, including Lagos, Nassarawa, Kano, Jigawa, Enugu, Abia, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Bauchi, Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Osun, and Ogun. It is essential that parents in these states take advantage of this opportunity to protect their daughters.

It is crucial to note that the HPV vaccine is a powerful tool in preventing cervical cancer, but it should not replace regular cervical cancer screening tests. Women who have received the vaccine should still undergo regular screenings as recommended by healthcare professionals.
