The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has taken decisive action to address the issue of structurally compromised high-rise buildings in Lagos Island and the Mushin region. The agency has initiated partial demolition measures as a preventive measure to avert the possibility of building collapses that could pose a severe threat to lives and property.
The Director of Enforcement of LASBCA, Mr. Olaopa Olusoji, led the demolition operation, ensuring the immediate evacuation of people from the affected buildings. The agency promptly alerted residents and traders in the popular Oke-Arin Street Market about the imminent danger posed by four-storey buildings in an extremely distressed state. This necessitated immediate demolition for the safety of all concerned.
As a result, property owners, traders, and residents swiftly removed their belongings and merchandise as the demolition team began the process of partial demolition on several buildings. Buildings numbered 18, 19, and 21, all of which were four stories high, were targeted for partial demolition due to their compromised structural condition.
One unnumbered two-storey building on Oke-Arin Street also underwent partial demolition to mitigate the risk it posed. Families residing in a four-storey building at number 21 promptly removed their belongings, showing their understanding of the gravity of the situation.
Although some tenants faced the difficult decision of leaving without a clear alternative, they expressed gratitude for the opportunity to vacate the building safely. Their safety and the prevention of potential disasters took precedence over any inconvenience caused.
Subsequently, the LASBCA team proceeded to Doherty Street, where they conducted partial demolitions on two slanted four-storey buildings that had merged with a supporting pillar. Some tenants claimed they were previously informed by developers that the buildings would not be demolished until February 2024, leading them to pay rent unexpectedly.
In Mushin, the agency carried out partial demolition on a four-storey building on Garba Musa Street, drawing the attention of concerned neighbors and sympathizers. At 41 Sarki Street, Idiaraba, the deteriorating state of beams and pillars prompted LASBCA to remove portions of balconies and doors, opting against total demolition due to the fear of a sudden collapse.
Additional demolitions occurred at Layi Oyekanmi Street in Ilasa, Mushin, involving two separate three-storey buildings. LASBCA also took measures to seal and mark several other buildings for eviction and demolition.
Mr. Olaopa Olusoji, the LASBCA Director of Enforcement, explained that the agency proceeded with the demolitions following the issuance of statutory notifications. He stressed the importance of immediate evacuation due to the unpredictable nature of building collapses and the high-risk nature of living in such conditions.
The LASBCA's actions highlight their commitment to prioritizing saving lives rather than engaging in prolonged debates. Residents were given sufficient time through the notices served to vacate the premises and ensure their safety.
With these proactive measures, LASBCA aims to prevent potential building collapses and protect lives and property in Lagos Island and the Mushin region. The agency's swift response and commitment to public safety are commendable, ensuring that residents are not exposed to unnecessary risk.
