NTCA Urges Federal Government to Increase Budgetary Allocations for Tobacco Control in Nigeria
The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) has called on the federal government to increase budgetary allocations for tobacco control in the country. The NTCA Chairman highlighted the low budget for tobacco control and emphasized the need for increased funding to implement effective programs. The representative from the Federal Ministry of Health emphasized the importance of budgeting in advocacy and encouraged engagement with relevant committees and government bodies. Furthermore, effective tools for tobacco control advocacy were discussed, including news releases, surveys, and understanding government policies and global trends.

The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) has urged the federal government to prioritize and increase budgetary allocations for tobacco control in Nigeria. The call was made during a one-day capacity building workshop on Tobacco Control Budget Advocacy held in Abuja.

The Chairman of NTCA, Akinbode Oluwafemi, highlighted the abysmally low budget for tobacco control in Nigeria. He stressed the importance of adequate funding to effectively implement the national tobacco law and regulations and carry out necessary programs.

Oluwafemi expressed disappointment regarding the suspension of increased taxation on tobacco products by the previous administration. He urged the current government to rectify this in the next fiscal year, as increased taxation can serve as a revenue source for funding tobacco control activities.

"We want to see a government that can independently fund some of the tobacco control activities outlined in the law and regulations," Oluwafemi stated.

Representing the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. M.T Malaw emphasized the significance of budgeting in advocacy. He explained that budgeting requires commitment, discipline, and legal strength. He also outlined the stages involved in the budgeting process and suggested engaging the support of committees on appropriation in the National Assembly and heads of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for tobacco control budgeting.

Michael Olaniya, discussing tools for effective tobacco control advocacy, highlighted the importance of careful planning and understanding of government policies, research, and global best practices. He identified various tools such as news releases, survey polls, and engagement with media outlets to amplify advocacy efforts.

"To ensure effective tobacco control advocacy, one must be prepared for a long journey," Olaniya highlighted.

Advocacy for increased budgetary allocations for tobacco control in Nigeria is crucial to combat the harmful effects of tobacco use and promote a healthier population. Allocating adequate funds to tobacco control programs will contribute to reducing tobacco-related risks and protecting the well-being of Nigerian citizens.
