Lafarge Africa Plc, one of the innovative and sustainable building solutions companies, is committed to promoting environmentally sustainable operations across its facilities. The company has invested approximately 7.5mCHF to minimize the environmental impact of its operations while adopting state-of-the-art technology and prioritizing the health and safety of its people and host communities.
With a firm focus on high standards for health, safety, and the environment (HSE), Lafarge Africa aims to conduct its business without causing harm to individuals and to minimize its environmental footprint. Achieving this requires continuous improvement and investments in research and innovation.
A significant milestone in Lafarge Africa's sustainability strategy has been reached with the completion of the installation of new bag filter technology at its Ewekoro plant. This technology ensures compliance with Nigerian Regulatory Standards and reflects the company's commitment to reducing dust emissions.
Rachael Ezembakwe, Head of Health, Safety, and Environment at Lafarge Africa Plc, expressed the company's dedication to environmental protection and global standards by saying, "We continuously upgrade our operating models and strategy through extensive investments in research and innovation. In order to comply with global standards and contribute to building a safer planet, we successfully replaced our dust emission control device in our Ewekoro Plant I, from the Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) to a more modern and effective system, the 'Bag House' dust collection system."
Furthermore, Lafarge Africa has taken measures to mitigate fugitive emissions by addressing dust emissions from other sources such as roads surrounding its plants. These additional measures not only help preserve the local environment but also minimize the impact on neighboring and host communities.
Air quality measurements are conducted by Lafarge Africa within a 10-kilometer radius of its plants to ensure conformance to acceptable limits. This proactive approach to monitoring ensures that dust emissions remain within regulatory limits and validated by the National Environmental Standard and Regulations Agency (NESREA) during periodic inspections of the Ewekoro Plant.
Ezembakwe added, "We are fully aware of the environmental impact of our operations, particularly on our host communities. As such, we carried out a comprehensive social impact assessment in our Ewekoro plant in the year 2020, resulting in a robust action plan to reduce dust emission."
This action plan included the replacement of the Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) used at the plant with a bag house filter, along with other significant adjustments to production activities over a six-month period. Additionally, a robust maintenance system was established for the dust control equipment at the plant.
Since the implementation of these measures, the dust emissions at Lafarge Africa's Ewekoro Plant have consistently remained below the regulatory limit of 50mg/Nm3. Real-time monitoring ensures emissions levels remain within acceptable limits and are validated by NESREA during inspections.
Lafarge Africa's commitment to environmentally sustainable operations and its investments in technology and compliance demonstrate its dedication to minimizing the environmental impact of its operations, protecting the health and safety of its people, and contributing to building a safer planet.
This sustainable approach aligns with global standards and sets an example for other companies to follow. Lafarge Africa remains steadfast in its mission to create innovative and sustainable building solutions while reducing its environmental footprint and positively impacting host communities.
