Nigerian security forces have successfully rescued dozens of prisoners, mostly women and children, who were held captive by extremist rebels in the country's northeast region. A series of military operations conducted in the Gwoza district of Borno state resulted in the liberation of 25 prisoners, with additional rescues made in the villages of Gobara and Gava. The military confirmed that a total of 25 prisoners were rescued during demining operations in Gwoza. The army spokesman, Onyema Nwachukwu, released photographs of the freed hostages, which included several young children.
Most of the rescued individuals appeared to be suffering from malnutrition and were dressed in worn-out clothing, indicating that they may have been held captive for a prolonged period. Nwachukwu stated, "All rescued victims are currently under the custody of the troops and are being assessed," emphasizing that the operations are part of the ongoing efforts to eradicate the remnants of Boko Haram terrorist enclaves in Borno and other states.
In a separate operation, seven members of a "Boko Haram terrorist family" surrendered to the Nigerian troops on Sunday. This group consisted of three adults and four children.
The Boko Haram insurgency, which began in 2009 with the aim of establishing Islamic Sharia law in Nigeria, has since splintered into different factions, with the most powerful faction receiving support from the Islamic State. These extremists frequently target women, children, and security forces in remote areas of northeastern Nigeria.
The violence perpetrated by these extremist groups has had a devastating impact, resulting in the death of at least 35,000 people and the displacement of 2.1 million individuals. The effects of their violent activities have spilled over into neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, according to the United Nations in Nigeria.
