The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has issued a warning to its customers regarding potential fraud related to the upgrade of STS prepaid meters. The company assures its customers that the meter upgrade process will be completely free of charge and advises them to exercise caution and not fall prey to fraudulent activities.

Mr. Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, highlighted the need for this cautionary measure due to reports of some unscrupulous individuals attempting to extort unsuspecting customers under the guise of meter upgrades. Ezeh firmly stated that customers will not be charged any fee for the upgrade process.

The upgrade process itself will involve the inclusion of Key Change Tokens (KCT) when customers recharge their meters. These tokens will be provided to customers along with their regular credit tokens. Customers only need to input the KCT into their meter to complete the upgrade.

EEDC recently announced that all Standard Transfer Specification (STS) prepaid meters must be upgraded by 24th November 2024 in order to continue accepting credit tokens. This requirement will affect all STS-compliant prepaid meters worldwide. Therefore, EEDC urges its customers to ensure their meter upgrades are completed before the provided deadline.

It is important to note that failing to upgrade the meter before 24th November 2024 will result in the meter no longer accepting new credit tokens. However, the meter will continue to function until the remaining loaded credit is used up.

Customers should also be aware that any credit tokens purchased but not loaded onto the meter before the upgrade will become invalid. To avoid losing any purchased credits, it is crucial to complete the upgrade before the specified date.
