In a press briefing held in Onitsha, Anambra State, Peter Obi, the presidential bannerman of the Labour Party, revealed his plan to appeal the verdict of the presidential election petition tribunal. During the briefing, Obi expressed his disagreement with the court's reasoning and conclusions.
While acknowledging the Court's contributions to due process and the strengthening of democracy, Obi stated, "It is my intention as a presidential candidate and the intention of the Labour Party to challenge this judgment by way of appeal immediately, as allowed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
Obi's legal representative has been instructed to file an appeal in the Supreme Court, and he emphasized that he will not relent in his quest to retrieve the people's mandate. He accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of compromising the credibility of the February 25 presidential election.
In his statement, Obi said, "I shall not relent in the quest for justice, not necessarily for myself, but indeed for our teeming supporters all over the country whose mandate to us at the polls was regrettably truncated by INEC."
Peter Obi expressed his gratitude to Nigerians for their support and contributions towards creating a better and new Nigeria. He extended his appreciation to his legal team, the Labour Party, and well-meaning supporters.
In a related development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also expressed surprise over the final ruling of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. The acting chairman of the PDP, Umar Damagum, addressed the media in Abuja and conveyed his surprise at the verdict.
While urging members of the party not to be deterred by the tribunal's outcome, Damagum stated that they would explore other legal options to ensure justice is attained.
