The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has laid the groundwork to retain American coach Randy Waldrum as the head coach of the Super Falcons, the country's national women's team. The decision comes after Waldrum guided the team to an impressive performance at the FIFA Women's World Cup held in Australia and New Zealand.
The NFF has given its Technical Committee the mandate to initiate discussions with Waldrum regarding the extension of his current contract. The urgency stems from the Super Falcons' upcoming Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match, scheduled to take place next week.
NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, praised Waldrum's achievements, emphasizing the need for continuity. "The man has done well by leading the team to an impressive outing at the FIFA World Cup," Gusau remarked.
Having signed a two-year contract in 2021, Waldrum has successfully steered the Super Falcons to qualify for both the 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco and the FIFA Women's World Cup. The team's performance in Australia displayed their potential, holding Olympic champions Canada to a scoreless draw and securing a victory against co-hosts Australia.
In the Round of 16, the Super Falcons held their own in an intense match that ended scoreless in regulation and extra time, only to be defeated in a penalty shootout against England.
The NFF Executive Committee, in a meeting over the weekend in Uyo, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting women's football. The Board stressed the importance of maintaining and improving the team's momentum, calling for extensive support and encouragement for women's football at all levels.
In addition to extending Waldrum's contract, the NFF also resolved to prioritize meritocracy in the selection of coaching staff for the various women's national teams, including the Super Falcons, Falconets, and Flamingos. The composition of new coaching crews will be finalized in the shortest possible time, considering the crucial qualifying fixtures the Super Falcons and Falconets have ahead.
Retaining Waldrum and ensuring a solid coaching foundation for the Super Falcons will provide stability and foster continued growth for women's football in Nigeria. The NFF's commitment to developing and supporting the team reflects their belief in the Super Falcons' potential to achieve more success on the international stage.
