In an attempt to ease the commuting struggles faced by civil servants and the general public in Borno State, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has unveiled a new fleet of 70 buses. The primary objective behind this initiative is to provide convenient and affordable transportation options, especially in light of the recent removal of fuel subsidy.
The newly acquired fleet consists of standard-sized and larger buses capable of accommodating a greater number of passengers. Each vehicle is equipped with modern amenities, such as air conditioning facilities and comfortable seating arrangements, ensuring a pleasant commuting experience.
During the unveiling ceremony held at the Borno Express terminus, Governor Zulum highlighted the significance of this transport intervention. He emphasized that 30 of the buses would be dedicated to transporting civil servants to and from their workplaces during specific peak hours on weekdays.
"I want you to ensure that these buses start operations tomorrow morning, unfailingly. You should, however, be mindful of our situation and ensure that you bring down the cost of transportation. Let us consider it as a social service and not as a revenue generation drive," Zulum stated.
Zulum also commended the management of Borno Express for their efforts in transforming the Maiduguri terminus and enhancing the welfare of their staff, both serving and retired. The governor acknowledged the consistent and timely payment of staff entitlements by the General Manager, Mohammed Grema, emphasizing that it was highly commendable.
In addition to the fleet of buses, Governor Zulum unveiled newly constructed structures and remodeled buildings at the terminus. These structures will serve as accommodations for travelers and operate various businesses including restaurants and offices.
All the construction projects, as well as the acquisition of the new buses, were funded through internal revenue generated by the Borno Express company.
The introduction of this new fleet of buses is a commendable step towards improving transportation accessibility in Borno State. It is hoped that this initiative will help alleviate the burden of commuting and create a more convenient and comfortable experience for both civil servants and the general public.
