Minister Nyesom Wike Inspects Abuja Rail Mass Transit Project
Minister Nyesom Wike recently inspected the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) System rehabilitation project as his first official assignment. He expressed his commitment to addressing transportation challenges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and improving public transportation. Wike emphasized the need to complete ongoing projects before embarking on new ones and urged the construction company to deliver quality work. The rehabilitation of the rail system is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the city.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, wasted no time in addressing the challenges affecting public transportation in the FCT. Shortly after assuming office, he embarked on his first official assignment to inspect the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) System rehabilitation project.

During his visit to the ARMT Metro Station in Abuja, Wike expressed his commitment to transforming the transportation sector in the short term. He highlighted the importance of reducing traffic congestion within the city by providing efficient and reliable transportation options.

Wike acknowledged the existing metro station in Abuja that remains non-operational and questioned why it had not been fixed. He stressed the need to prioritize completing ongoing projects before initiating new ones, utilizing available resources effectively.

The minister emphasized that restoring public confidence in the completed and functioning parts of the project is crucial. By doing so, people will trust that ongoing projects will also be completed and put into use.

During his train ride from the Metro Station to Airport and Idu Stations, Wike inspected the ongoing rehabilitation project of the rail system. He lauded it as a "good project" that, when completed, has the potential to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the city.

Wike assured the construction company, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) Nig. Ltd, of his commitment to delivering quality projects. He directed the Permanent Secretary, FCT Administration, Mr Adesola Olusade, to ensure the contractor receives payment promptly.

The Minister of State for FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, accompanied Wike on his visit. She highlighted the importance of assessing the problems affecting the rail transport system to find effective solutions and improve public transportation.

Prioritizing the completion and usability of existing projects, the FCT Administration aims to address the challenges faced by the ARMT system. The massive vandalization of rail infrastructure during the COVID-19 lockdown has been a major hurdle, but private security companies have been engaged to mitigate these issues.

With the ongoing rehabilitation project and the involvement of the Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company in managing the operation, the FCT Administration aims to reduce the pains associated with the removal of fuel subsidy.

Director of Transportation, FCTA, Mr Joseph Akinteye, explained that the ARMT system rehabilitation project consists of Lots 1 A and 3, covering a total of 45.245 kilometers. While the project's completion will undoubtedly bring relief to commuters, the FCT Administration remains committed to addressing transportation challenges comprehensively.

In the coming months, as the project nears completion, we can expect a commendable effort from Minister Wike and his team to ensure that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit System becomes fully operational and contributes to the transformation of transportation in the nation's capital.
