In a devastating incident in the city of Enugu, four children were tragically killed when a building collapsed in the Agric Quarters of the Mgbemena axis in Coal Camp. The Enugu Capital Territory Development Agency (ECTDA) officially confirmed the heart-wrenching incident after conducting an inspection at the site.
Chairman of the ECTDA, Mr Uche Anya, expressed his sorrow over the unfortunate incident caused by the collapse of a bungalow building. Originally designated for animal husbandry purposes, it had been illegally converted into a residential property.
Friday night at approximately 8pm, following heavy rainfall, the structure succumbed to the weight and collapsed. The tragedy claimed the lives of four innocent children from the same family, throwing the community into deep mourning.
Anya, speaking to journalists, expressed his concern over the poor conditions of the building, stating that it was completely unsuitable for human habitation. Having 44 rooms filled with approximately 200 residents, the structure was dangerously overcrowded.
"It was danger waiting to happen. The construction was irresponsible," Anya asserted. "The place should never have been occupied by human beings. In fact, go there and see."
The chairman criticized the lack of proper fencing around the property, calling it "totally unacceptable." He also lamented the loss of innocent lives, emphasizing the pain and sorrow caused by the tragic event.
Furthermore, Anya revealed that the ECTDA would intensify efforts to educate the public on the importance of living in safer environments, in order to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The agency's compliance unit, under his leadership, will strictly enforce adherence to approved construction plans by landlords and contractors.
As a response to the building collapse and the potential risks posed by neighboring structures, the ECTDA issued immediate quit notices to the occupants of the collapsed building and four other nearby buildings. This swift action aims to protect the occupants and prevent any future tragedies from occurring.
This unfortunate incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of adhering to construction regulations, prioritizing the safety and well-being of residents. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our homes and buildings are structurally sound, allowing us to live in environments that promote safety and security.
The tragic loss of these young lives should inspire us to be more vigilant in identifying and reporting potential hazards in our communities. Let us work together to prevent such heartbreaking incidents and create a safer and more secure future for all.
