Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria Calls for Equity in Budgetary Allocation to Health Sector
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has demanded equity in the budgetary allocation to the health sector, particularly the pharmacy industry. The PSN emphasized the need for fairness and equal opportunities for pharmacists to contribute to the country's health sector. Additionally, the PSN welcomed the government's intention to promote the pharmaceutical industry's growth and reduce dependence on imports. The society also highlighted the significance of entrepreneurship and mentorship in professional growth and national development. Furthermore, the PSN reaffirmed the crucial role of the pharmacy profession in drug research and development, drug regulation, clinical practice, and drugs and vaccine production. The society pledged to pursue strategies to combat drug and substance abuse and promote excellence in pharmacy education and research.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has called for equity in the budgetary allocation to the health sector, with a specific focus on the pharmacy industry. In a recent press conference held ahead of its Mid-Year Meeting, the PSN's Board of Fellows (BOF) expressed concerns about the lopsidedness in dealing with professionals in the health sector. The society emphasized the importance of fairness and equal opportunities for pharmacists to contribute to the country's health sector.

The PSN commended the government's agenda to support the pharmaceutical industry and reduce dependence on imports. Pharm. Dr. Joel Adagazu, Chairman of BOF-PSN, expressed congratulations to the government for its decision and assured that the society would collaborate closely with the leadership of PSN and other stakeholders to follow up on the matter.

As part of the Mid-Year Meeting, BOF-PSN has organized various events to support its members and address national importance. The first event, scheduled for July 11, is a seminar/workshop on entrepreneurship. The society recognizes the growing significance of entrepreneurship in the global investment environment and aims to support fellows faced with challenges in their businesses.

On July 12, the society will hold the 5th Public Lecture, themed "Leveraging Mentorship for Professional Growth and National Development." BOF-PSN acknowledges mentorship as a concept that is rapidly evolving and a valuable strategy for the development of the younger generation by their older counterparts. The society believes that when properly harnessed, mentorship can yield significant dividends, with experienced fellows providing guidance and motivation for the growth and development of their younger colleagues.

BOF-PSN is committed to contributing to national development and plans to present resolutions and recommendations to the government. The pharmacy profession plays a vital role in drug research and development, drugs and vaccine production, drug administration and regulation, as well as ensuring drug safety. The society emphasized the importance of government support in sustaining the Nigerian pharmaceutical industry.

Furthermore, BOF-PSN is determined to intensify its campaign against drug and substance abuse. The society intends to enhance its activities in this area with greater vigor, subject to the availability of funds. However, the society remains hopeful for the future and looks forward to making notable progress in their endowments fund projects to promote excellence in pharmacy education and research.

The Mid-Year Meeting will conclude on July 13 with a dinner, where BOF-PSN will recognize and award individuals who have made outstanding contributions to national development and supported the growth of the pharmacy sector in Nigeria.

Renowned speakers, including fellows of the PSN, scholars, academicians, leadership experts, orators, and administrators, will grace the conference and share their insights on various subjects related to pharmacy and national development. Notable personalities such as Prof Lere Baale, FPSN, a professor of Business Studies from the Business School of the Netherlands in Lagos, and Mr. Manason G. Rubianu, a scientist of repute and President of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), will be among the distinguished speakers.
