In a bid to address the deteriorating state of the Abuja Urban Mass Transportation Company (AUMTC), the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has vowed to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of the company. Despite the financial challenges faced by the Administration, Wike remains determined to transform the capital city's transportation system into a world-class one.
During a visit from the House of Representatives Committee on Mass Transit, Minister Wike articulated his concerns about Abuja's lack of a well-functioning mass transportation system. He described it as embarrassing for a capital city to fall short in this key aspect of infrastructure.
One of the issues highlighted by Minister Wike was the irresponsible loaning out of AUMTC buses for private purposes, such as events held by churches and individuals. This neglectful attitude towards government assets has contributed to the current comatose state of the transportation company. Wike emphasized the importance of taking collective responsibility for the upkeep of public assets, asserting that "where you work should be your concern."
Furthermore, Minister Wike addressed the issue of "one chance" operators, who have been a menace within the FCT. With a well-functioning transportation system in place, he assured residents that these fraudulent operators would fade away.
President Bola Tinubu, as part of the federal government's subsidy program, has approved N2 billion for palliative measures in the FCT. Minister Wike expressed his intention to direct a portion of these funds towards improving transportation systems, but he emphasized the need to identify areas where they are most needed.
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Mass Transit, Afam Oghene, pledged full support to the FCT Minister's efforts to revitalize the capital city's transportation system. Oghene reiterated the committee's commitment to collaborating with Wike to ensure the full functionality of the Abuja Metro Line, further aligning with the Minister's vision.
The overhaul of the Abuja Urban Mass Transportation Company promises to bring positive changes to the capital city's transportation system. Minister Nyesom Wike's determination and commitment, coupled with the support of the House of Representatives Committee on Mass Transit, provide hope for a future where Abuja boasts a world-class mass transportation system that caters to the needs of its residents.
