Lagos - AFP: Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian forward from Napoli, netted a hat-trick for his national team in their commanding 6-0 triumph over São Tomé and Príncipe during the final round of qualifying matches for the 2024 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.
Nigeria, already qualified in a previous round, increased their points tally to 15, securing top spot in Group A. Guinea-Bissau, the second-place team with 10 points, have only one match remaining against Sierra Leone.
Osimhen, who excelled last season when he led Napoli to their first title in 33 years, emerged as the star of the game with his three goals.
The goal-scoring sensation also impressed in the first leg encounter, as Nigeria achieved a historic 10-0 victory, with Osimhen contributing four goals.
He opened the scoring with a header after 13 minutes, before Ademola Lookman doubled Nigeria's lead in the 27th minute.
In the second half, the Nigerian team added four more goals, with Taiwo Awoniyi (51'), Osimhen (69' penalty and 79'), and Samuel Chukwueze (84') all getting on the scoresheet.
With this performance, Osimhen solidifies his place at the top of the African qualifying goal scorers' list, taking his tally to 10 goals.
Victor Boniface, who is excelling at Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, made his international debut as a substitute in the second half.
