Federal Government proposes joint rehabilitation of Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway with Ogun State government

The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Ogun State government, has proposed a joint rehabilitation project for the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway. This initiative aims to expedite the road construction process and alleviate the challenges faced by commuters traveling along this important route.

During a courtesy call on Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, highlighted the frustrations experienced by Ogun and Lagos states during previous administrations in their efforts to get the road rehabilitated. He emphasized that the era of bureaucracy in road construction was over, and if corporate organizations could be involved in road infrastructure development, state governments should also be given the opportunity.

Engr. Umahi announced that the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway falls under the new Highway Development Management Initiative (HDMI), which is a public-private partnership program. He proposed that the state government take ownership of 60% of the project, while the Federal Government would cover the remaining 40%. The state government would also be responsible for selecting their contractor to work on their portion of the road.

The minister emphasized his disdain for bureaucracy in infrastructure development, stating that prompt responses to requests should be the norm. The HDMI program aims to reset the economy by expediting road construction projects and ensuring smooth operations in the transportation sector.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by commuters, Governor Abiodun expressed his frustration at the delays in rehabilitating the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta Expressway.
