Islamic Scholars Call on President Tinubu Not to Swear in El-Rufai as Minister
The Coalition of Quranic Memorisers and Reciters in Bauchi state, Nigeria, have urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider swearing in Nasir El-Rufai as a minister in his cabinet. The Islamic scholars believe El-Rufai's nomination and screening were injustices to the Quranic community. The Senate is yet to confirm El-Rufai and two other nominees due to ongoing security checks.

Bauchi state, Nigeria - The Coalition of Quranic Memorisers and Reciters has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the nomination of Nasir El-Rufai as a minister in his cabinet. The Islamic scholars believe that it would be an injustice to the Quranic memorisers and reciters to swear in El-Rufai due to his questionable character and past actions.

Speaking on behalf of the clerics, Sheikh Sidi Aliyu Sise, the Director of Education for the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation, advised President Tinubu to tread with caution and prioritize justice, fairness, and the peace and stability of the country. He emphasized the need to avoid swearing in politicians with questionable character into public office.

The nomination of Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna state, has been met with controversy. The Coalition of Quranic Memorisers and Reciters argues that El-Rufai's nomination and subsequent screening by the National Assembly were unjust acts. The scholars are concerned that by confirming El-Rufai as a minister, it sends a message that politicians with questionable character can hold positions of power in the country.

However, the fate of El-Rufai's ministerial appointment is still uncertain as he is one of three nominees yet to be confirmed. The nominees, including El-Rufai, Stella Okotete of Delta State, and Sani Danladi of Taraba State, are still undergoing security checks. Until the clearance process is completed, their inclusion in Tinubu's cabinet remains pending.

The screening of President Tinubu's ministerial nominees was concluded by the Senate on Monday, with 45 out of the 48 nominees being confirmed as cabinet members. While the majority received approval, the remaining three nominees are still awaiting security clearance. This delay has pushed back the resumption date for the ministerial nominees, which is estimated to be between August 14 and 18.

The extended timeline allows the 48 ministerial nominees to adequately prepare for their roles and relocate to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. As they embark on their responsibilities as ministers, they will face the task of addressing the pressing issues and challenges faced by the nation.

The call from the Coalition of Quranic Memorisers and Reciters highlights the concerns of a particular community regarding Nasir El-Rufai's appointment. As the president, it is now up to Bola Ahmed Tinubu to carefully consider the concerns raised by the scholars and make a decision that upholds justice, fairness, and the best interests of the country.
