Illegal Mining and Insecurity Ravage Federal Capital Territory
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has responded to the death of 30 people in a landslide caused by illegal mining in the Kuje Area Council of the FCT. In addition, there have been reports of 19 kidnappings in the Bwari Area Council. These challenges were raised by the council area chairman during a meeting between Wike and the six Area Councils Chairmen.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria is facing a twofold crisis - illegal mining and heightened insecurity. The Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, has expressed his concern over the recent death of 30 people in the Kuje Area Council due to a landslide caused by the activities of illegal miners. This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for measures to combat illegal mining in the region.

Furthermore, the FCT has been grappling with a surge in kidnappings. During a meeting between Wike and the six Area Councils Chairmen, it was revealed that 19 people were abducted in the Bwari Area Council. This alarming development demands immediate attention from security agencies to ensure the safety of residents across the entire region.

Addressing the concerns presented by the council area chairman, Wike acknowledged the challenges faced by the local government system. As a former council chairman himself, he empathized with their plight. Wike vowed to take action to tackle the issues raised during the meeting.

In response to the issue of illegal mining, Wike urged the council chairmen to establish a surveillance task force in their respective areas. This task force would monitor mining activities and provide critical information to combat the illegal operations. Wike also pledged to liaise with the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, to eradicate illegal mining in the FCT.

Regarding the rising insecurity, Wike emphasized the importance of information sharing and collaboration between the local government and security agencies. He expressed his intention to convene an emergency security meeting to address the recent incidents of kidnapping. Wike highlighted the need for effective communication channels to promptly respond to security threats and protect the vulnerable.

Sanitation emerged as another pressing concern voiced by the council chairmen. Wike acknowledged the issue and emphasized that waste disposal is a joint responsibility between the local government and the residents. He called for a unified approach and the adoption of a common template to improve sanitation practices across the FCT.

This meeting between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and the six Area Councils Chairmen serves as an important platform to address critical challenges being faced by the region. Recognizing the urgency, Wike assured the council chairmen of his commitment to finding lasting solutions to these issues.
