EDOCSO Criticizes EDSIEC for Allegedly Flawed Local Government Councils Election
The Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) has criticized Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) for conducting a Local Government Councils election allegedly marred by irregularities. The group called on EDSIEC to apologize for the national embarrassment and demanded reforms to ensure free and fair elections in the future.

The Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO) has expressed its disappointment and disapproval of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) following the recently concluded Local Government Councils election in the state. The election, which was anticipated to be free, fair, and credible, was marred by irregularities and fell short of the promises made during the pre-election process.

In a press conference held in Benin City, the Interim TEC Chairman of EDOCSO, Leftist Austine Enabulele, highlighted the shortcomings of the election and called for accountability. He stated, "Edolites came out in their numbers to exercise their franchise, trusting the assurances of the Edo State Government and EDSIEC. However, we were disappointed by the lack of materials and officials in over 70 percent of the polling units."

EDOCSO, as a civil rights group, demanded an apology from EDSIEC to the entire nation and specifically to the people of Edo State, who were subjected to this flawed election. The group emphasized the need for EDSIEC and other electoral bodies to uphold their responsibility of ensuring free, fair, and credible elections. They called for an end to the wastage of resources on elections that do not meet the expectations of the people.

Furthermore, EDOCSO suggested an amendment to the electoral act, granting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the power to conduct Local Government Councils elections in states. Despite acknowledging the credibility concerns surrounding INEC, EDOCSO believed it would be a step in the right direction.

The Chairman expressed gratitude to the voters who turned out despite the challenges faced during the election. He urged them not to lose hope, as they continue to strive towards a government system that upholds integrity and provides good governance.

The flawed local government councils election in Edo State has raised concerns about the competence and transparency of EDSIEC. EDOCSO's criticisms serve as a reminder of the importance of fair elections and the need for electoral bodies to restore public trust.

In conclusion, EDOCSO's call for an apology and systemic reforms in the electoral process highlights the desire for a better democratic system in Edo State and Nigeria as a whole. It is crucial for EDSIEC and other electoral bodies to address the shortcomings identified and take necessary actions to ensure that future elections are conducted with transparency and integrity.
