Nigeria Customs Collaborates with Benin Customs to Enhance Trade Relations

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has embarked on an initiative aimed at enhancing trade relations and customs administration between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. The Acting Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, made this known during a two-day working visit from the Director-General of Customs, Republic of Benin, Alain Hinkati, to Nigeria.

The collaboration between the two customs services is expected to foster regional integration, eliminate barriers, and promote legitimate trade within the West African region. Adeniyi expressed his gratitude for the establishment of fruitful discussions and resolutions during their previous visit to the Republic of Benin, which laid the foundation for future progress.

In a bid to stimulate economic growth, foster regional integration, and nurture prosperity among the nations, the Nigeria Customs Service is working closely with its Beninese counterparts on various fronts. These initiatives include reviewing and addressing impediments to the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, an integral part of regional trade facilitation.

Furthermore, the Nigeria Customs Service, alongside the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police, is implementing measures to reduce barriers along trade corridors, creating a more conducive environment for legitimate trade activities.

As part of their efforts, the NCS is integrating its IT systems with the Federal Road Safety to enhance monitoring and regulation of cross-border vehicle movements. This integration aims to curb the illegal entry of vehicles and ensure more efficient trade operations.

In addition, the Nigeria Customs Service has launched initiatives to harmonize the list of products prohibited in Nigeria. This step facilitates smoother trade relations with its partners and promotes consistency in customs practices.

The Nigeria Customs Service is also working towards integrating the Interconnected System for the Management of Goods in Transit (SIGMAT), alongside other West African nations. This integration promises to further streamline transit operations and improve regional trade dynamics.

The achievements and progress made so far underscore the commitment and dedication to collaboration with regional partners. However, the journey toward seamless trade within the West African region is far from complete. Adeniyi emphasizes the need for continued commitment and resolve to overcome the challenges that lie ahead.

During the visit, the Director-General of Customs, Republic of Benin, Alain Hinkati, expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Nigeria Customs Service in forging collaboration. He disclosed that both countries are exploring opportunities to facilitate the importation of goods through the borders by establishing a Nigeria clearing ground in the Republic of Benin.

The collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and the Customs Service of the Republic of Benin signifies a significant milestone in strengthening trade relations, boosting customs administration, and promoting regional cooperation. This partnership will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for economic growth, increased cross-border trade, and enhanced regional integration within the West African region.
