Minister Wike Warns Contractors Against Contract Variations for FCT Rehabilitation Projects

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to contractors in charge of the rehabilitation of 135 roads in the capital city. Speaking during the inauguration of a road project in Abuja, Wike made it clear that contract variations will not be tolerated, and all projects must be completed within the agreed timeline.

Wike assured the contractors that the FCT Administration has allocated the necessary funds to pay them promptly, ensuring that no debts will be left unpaid. He urged the contractors not to engage in any engineering services manipulations, emphasizing that no variations will be entertained.

Addressing the Permanent Secretary of FCT Administration, Olusade Adesola, Wike warned against reconsideration or any unanticipated issues, stating that everything has already been considered and anticipated.

Highlighting the significance of timely project completion, Wike called upon FCT residents to support the contractors and endure the inconveniences that may come with the construction process. He also sought the assistance of traditional rulers in mobilizing the youths and the entire community to support the contractors, ensuring the successful and timely delivery of the projects.

In a bid to transform the capital city, the FCT Administration has embarked on a range of projects to address various infrastructural challenges. The Minister of State, FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, highlighted the achievements made in a short span of three weeks since Wike assumed office. This includes addressing streetlight issues, sanitation concerns, and now the rehabilitation of road infrastructure.

The Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Adesola, elaborated on the scope and impact of the rehabilitation projects. The initiative covers the resurfacing and remedial works on 135 existing roads, as well as bridges across different districts. These measures are expected to significantly improve the lives of the people residing in the capital city.

The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, Ahmed Hadi, explained the deteriorating conditions of several roads, especially in Phase I, developed since 1980. The project will involve scarification and removal of existing asphalt, as well as asphalt overlay, in different locations.

A total of 135 roads in Wuse, Garki, Maitama, and Asokoro, covering a distance of 42 kilometers, will be transformed, leading to enhanced traffic flow, reduced travel time, and improved road safety.

The Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Mr. Muktar Betara, expressed confidence in Minister Wike's ability to accomplish the transformative agenda for the FCT. He assured the minister of the committee's support in making the capital city the desired destination for all Nigerians.

Traditional leaders, such as the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Yunusa, also pledged their support for the projects, acknowledging the minister's dedication to delivering the dividends of democracy to the city's residents.

The Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Mr. Christopher Maikalangu, commended Minister Wike for his efforts and requested that similar initiatives be extended to rural communities. He assured the minister of the council chairmen's support to ensure the projects reach completion.

Mr. Obada Zabadne, CEO of ZBMC Ltd, spoke on behalf of the contractors, expressing gratitude for the government's trust and confidence. Zabadne assured Minister Wike of the contractors' commitment to deliver quality projects beyond expectations within the agreed timeline.
