The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has finally settled the unpaid benefits and gratuity of Late Professor Ambrose Alli, the former Governor of Edo State. This commendable gesture comes after 34 years since Alli's demise, demonstrating the commitment of the current administration to prioritize the welfare of pensioners and honor the legacies of those who have served the state.
Professor Ambrose Alli, who served as the first Executive Governor of the former Bendel State (now Edo and Delta states) from 1979 to 1983, made significant contributions to the development of the state. Under Alli's leadership, notable policies and programs were implemented in areas such as education, urban and rural development, and healthcare, which continue to shape Edo State's progress today.
The settlement of Alli's benefits was announced by Governor Godwin Obaseki during the celebration of his recognition as the 'Most Pension Friendly Governor in Nigeria' by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners. Speaking on his commitment to the well-being of pensioners, Obaseki expressed the government's dedication to ensuring regular payment of benefits, including outstanding pensions and gratuity, some of which date back over 40 years.
The decision to settle the unpaid benefits of late Governor Alli was prompted by a conversation between Governor Obaseki's wife, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, and one of the Alli family members during the 80th birthday celebration of Chief Mrs. Rosemary Alli-Walker, the late governor's widow. The governor's wife discovered that the benefits of Prof. Ambrose Alli had not been settled, leading to the prompt action of issuing a cheque to Chief Mrs. Alli-Walker in the United Kingdom.
Expressing gratitude for the settlement, Chief Mrs. Alli-Walker highlighted the sacrifices made by her late husband for the state and commended the Obaseki administration for remembering him. She also pledged her support for 'Operation Smile,' an initiative aimed at providing free surgeries for children with cleft lips.
Reflecting on Chief Mrs. Alli-Walker's enduring commitment to values such as hard work, diligence, and forthrightness, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki praised her influence during her tenure as First Lady and how these values continue to inspire ongoing reforms in various sectors of the Edo State economy.
This settlement of Professor Ambrose Alli's benefits signifies not just a financial gesture but a symbolic recognition of his service to the state and a commitment to honoring those who have selflessly contributed to the progress of Edo State. It sets an example for other governments across the country to prioritize the welfare of pensioners and ensure that those who have dedicated their lives to public service receive their deserved benefits.
The positive action taken by Governor Godwin Obaseki's administration strengthens public confidence in the government's commitment to transparency, accountability, and empathy. It is a step towards redressing the historical neglect of pensioners and emphasizing the importance of valuing past leaders.
