Minister of FCT refutes claims of purchasing N300m armored Lexus SUV
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has denied allegations of purchasing a N300 million Armoured Lexus LX600 SUV. Wike termed the claims as "mischief" and clarified that he had not even begun working as the FCT Minister when the reports surfaced. He urged people to be careful and report accurately, highlighting that he did not use any official bulletproof car.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has refuted claims of purchasing a N300 million Armoured Lexus LX600 SUV on assumption of office. The allegations, made in some sections of the media, alleged that the luxurious SUV, fitted with an 'FCT - 01' plate, belonged to the newly appointed FCT Minister.

However, Wike dismissed these claims as mere "mischief" while briefing journalists during his visit to the Metro Train Station in Abuja on Wednesday. He emphasized that he had been sworn in on Monday and had not even had the opportunity to commence his official duties. Wike revealed that all he had done so far was interact with staff and inspect the ongoing rehabilitation of the Abuja Rail Mass Transport System.

"We are now going back to the office to interact with each of the departments in the Federal Capital Territory Administration," Wike stated. "But I have seen what is going on in the social media, how the FCTA Permanent Secretary bought a bulletproof car of N300 million that I am using."

The Minister explained that upon resuming office, the Permanent Secretary, Mr Adesola Olusade, had informed him that the FCTA had suitable cars for the ministers to use. Pointing at a regular Lexus SUV, he added, "And the car we use is this. I have never approved for any car to be bought, and I have not used any official bulletproof car. I am not using a bulletproof car as FCT Minister, so we should report the right thing and not destroy ourselves."

Wike then urged the journalists present to inspect the car he arrived with, which bore a flag, inviting them to verify if it was bulletproof. He stressed the importance of accurate reporting and cautioned against spreading false narratives.

The Minister's response comes amidst increased scrutiny and public criticism regarding government officials' lavish expenditures. In recent times, Nigerians have expressed concerns over extravagant spending on official vehicles and luxury items while basic infrastructure and public services remain inadequate.

As Wike assumes his role as FCT Minister, Nigerians will be keen to see if his leadership brings about positive change and better accountability in the administration of the Federal Capital Territory resources.
