Anambra State Governor Urged to Conduct Local Government and Market Elections
The Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders' Foundation have called on Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to commence the process of conducting local government and market elections in the state. The groups expressed their dissatisfaction with the appointment of caretaker chairmen to run all the Local Government Areas, describing it as unconstitutional. They urge Soludo to set up a State Electoral Commission to organize the elections within the next six months. The groups also highlight the need for market elections, stating that the current caretaker committee leaderships of the markets have expired, and elections are due.

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has been urged to initiate the process of conducting local government and market elections in the state. The Campaign for Democracy, South East chapter, and Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders' Foundation made this appeal, citing the unconstitutional and unacceptable nature of running all 21 Local Government Areas with caretaker chairmen.

The groups express disappointment in the lack of local government elections since the return of democracy in 1999. They highlight that only two local government elections have been organized in Anambra State – during the early days of the late Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju administration and towards the end of Peter Obi's administration in 2014.

Former Governor Willie Obiano's eight-year tenure also lacked local government elections, and the groups express concern that there are no indications of Governor Soludo's intention to conduct these crucial elections.

In their statement, the groups emphasize the need for democratic tenets and principles to be upheld, leading them to call for the immediate establishment of the State Electoral Commission. This commission bears the constitutional responsibility of organizing local government elections in the state, which the groups urge should be completed within the next six months.

Besides the local government elections, the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders' Foundation also draw attention to the need for market elections. The current caretaker committee leaderships of the markets have expired, and elections are long overdue.

The groups assert that Soludo needs strong leaders who can gain the trust and support of the traders. They contend that some market leaderships have purposely avoided conducting elections due to their unpopularity among the traders, implying that they cannot win in a fair election.

The urgency to hold market elections increases as it directly affects the confidence traders have in the governor's leadership. By allowing the traders to choose their leaders through elections, Soludo can gain their trust and ensure that the market's welfare is protected.

The appointment of caretaker chairmen for the local government areas and the delay in conducting market elections are deemed unconstitutional, prone to corruption, and a violation of the democratic process. By adhering to democratic principles and constitutional provisions, Governor Soludo can strengthen governance at the local level and promote the participation of citizens in decision-making processes.

The Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, Liberty Access and Peace Defenders' Foundation have made their appeal, highlighting the pressing need for local government and market elections in Anambra State. As a democrat to the core, many citizens view Soludo as having the potential to lead by example and uphold democratic values.

By initiating the machinery to conduct local government and market elections, Governor Soludo can demonstrate his commitment to democratic governance, allowing the people of Anambra State to participate in the selection of their leaders and ultimately contribute to the state's development.
