Obaseki Accuses Deputy, Plans Coup to Oust Him from Edo Governorship Race
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has accused his deputy, Philip Shaibu, of being desperate to become the next governor of the state and planning to oust him through a coup. Obaseki expressed shock and disappointment over his deputy's recent actions and narrated incidents that have strained their relationship. He emphasized the need for trust and unity in running the state, as well as the challenges they have faced within the party.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has accused his deputy, Philip Shaibu, of being desperate to become the next governor of the state and planning to oust him through a coup. Obaseki made this revelation during a meeting with elders and leaders from Etsako West, East, and Central Local Government Areas, as part of campaigns for the upcoming local council election.

Expressing shock and disappointment over his deputy's recent actions, Obaseki narrated incidents that have strained their relationship. He mentioned an incident when Shaibu allegedly called a leader in the All Progressives Congress (APC) to gather support in electing a Speaker for the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) without the governor's consent.

Obaseki highlighted that he had sacrificed to ensure Shaibu retained his position as deputy governor after they moved from the APC to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2020 governorship poll crisis. However, he criticized Shaibu's handling of politics in Edo North, which has resulted in the absence of PDP members from Etsako in the EDHA.

The governor emphasized the importance of trust, unity, and working together to overcome challenges and build institutions rather than individuals. He expressed his disappointment that his deputy had not discussed his gubernatorial ambitions with him and characterized Shaibu's recent actions as betrayal.

Obaseki stated that the Constitution does not provide for a co-governor but gives the deputy governor the responsibility assigned by the governor. He made it clear that his deputy's actions were not in the interest of the party and that he, as the governor, holds the power and authority to govern the state.

In conclusion, Obaseki acknowledged the support of the leaders and elders from Etsako and reassured them of his commitment to finishing his term as governor and consolidating the PDP's position in the state. He expressed his willingness to consider Shaibu's remorse if shown and addressed the need for peace and unity within the party.
