Investigation Commences into United Nigeria Airlines Incident at Lagos Airport
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into an incident involving a United Nigeria Airlines plane at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The plane skidded off the runway after landing, but no injuries or fatalities were reported. The NSIB is calling on the public to provide any evidence that can assist in the investigation.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has started an investigation into an incident involving a United Nigeria Airlines plane at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The aircraft, an Embraer ERJ145, with registration number 5N-BWY, was traveling from Abuja to Lagos with 51 passengers and four crew members when the incident occurred on Friday, September 8, 2023, at around 6:33 pm.

According to the NSIB's director of public affairs and consumer protection, Tunji Oketunbi, the plane skidded off runway 18R after landing. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities. The NSIB has appealed to the general public to provide any pictures, videos, or recording evidence that can aid in conducting a comprehensive investigation.

The NSIB is a transportation accident investigation agency in Nigeria tasked with identifying the probable causes of incidents and providing safety recommendations to prevent their recurrence. They have requested that the public and press respect the privacy of those involved and avoid speculating on the cause of the incident until the formal report is released. The preliminary report will be made public soon.

Tunji Oketunbi assured that the NSIB is fully committed to investigating the incident and has made progress. They are waiting to ensure that all crew members and passengers receive necessary medical attention before proceeding with interrogations.

This is not the first time United Nigeria Airlines has experienced an overshoot of the runway. On May 31, 2023, another incident occurred at the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2 in Lagos, involving a United Nigeria Airlines plane inbound from Abakaliki, Ebonyi state. The plane skidded off runway 18L but thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The aviation industry places a significant emphasis on safety, and incidents like these highlight the importance of thorough investigations. The NSIB's efforts will help identify the root causes of such incidents and ultimately enhance safety protocols within the industry.
