José Peseiro Renews Contract as Nigeria Coach Until 2024
Portuguese coach José Peseiro has extended his contract as the head coach of the Nigeria national football team until February 2024. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the news, stating that Peseiro had accepted a pay cut. The coach's initial contract had expired, and there were speculations about his future due to disagreements over his salary. Peseiro's goal is to lead the Super Eagles to at least the semifinals of the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Portuguese coach José Peseiro has reached an agreement with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to continue as the head coach of the Nigeria national football team, the Super Eagles. Peseiro has extended his contract until February 2024, following negotiations that included a salary reduction.

The 63-year-old coach had initially signed a $70,000 monthly contract with the NFF in 2022. However, with the contract expiring and unresolved differences over the salary, there were doubts about Peseiro's future with the team.

In a statement released by the NFF late on Sunday, the federation confirmed Peseiro's contract renewal and praised his previous achievements. As part of the original contract signed in May 2022, Peseiro's mandate was to guide the Super Eagles to, at least, the semifinals of the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations scheduled to take place in Ivory Coast in the coming months.

The NFF stated, "The Nigerian Football Federation and Mr. José Santos Peseiro have reached an agreement for the latter to continue in his role as the head coach of the men's senior national team, the Super Eagles."

The Nigerian national team, three-time winners of the African Cup of Nations, has already secured a spot in the upcoming tournament happening in January in Ivory Coast.

Peseiro, who has previously coached the Venezuelan national team and clubs such as Sporting Lisbon and Panathinaikos, accepted the salary cut to continue his tenure as Nigeria's coach. His experience includes serving as the assistant coach at Real Madrid alongside countryman Carlos Queiroz during the 2003-2004 season.

The NFF's decision to retain Peseiro as the head coach underscores their confidence in his ability to lead the Super Eagles. Nigeria is highly regarded in African football and has a strong footballing tradition.

Peseiro's task now will be to guide Nigeria through the upcoming African Cup of Nations, targeting a strong performance and aiming to bring home the trophy.

The Super Eagles, led by Peseiro, have a talented squad consisting of several players plying their trade in top European leagues. With renewed optimism and stability in the coaching setup, Nigerian football fans will be eagerly anticipating their team's performances in the upcoming tournament.
