Nigerian Meteorological Agency Achieves ISO Certification for Aeronautical Meteorological Services and Capacity Building
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has obtained recertification from the International Standard Organization (ISO) for its aeronautical meteorological services and capacity building. This certification underscores the agency's commitment to delivering high-quality products and services. NiMet is spearheading the adoption of quality management systems and safety management systems across all its operations in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has recently achieved recertification from the International Standard Organization (ISO) for its aeronautical meteorological services and capacity building efforts. This certification attests to the agency's dedication to providing top-notch products and services.

The Director-General and CEO of NiMet, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu, announced this significant achievement in Abuja, affirming the successful completion of a rigorous quality management audit. The ISO recertification solidifies NiMet's commitment to delivering reliable and efficient meteorological services.

Professor Matazu further highlighted that this ISO recertification symbolizes the agency's endeavors for standardization and guarantees the precision and effectiveness of NiMet's offerings. By subjecting its operations to quality management systems, NiMet is ensuring the delivery of accurate and reliable meteorological data to its clients.

Moreover, the agency is actively transforming its operations into Safety Management Systems (SMS) across all its spheres of influence in the country. This move underlines NiMet's commitment to ensuring the safety of its operations in line with international best practices.

The ISO 9001:2015 recertification specifically pertains to aeronautical meteorological services in the six major international airports in Nigeria. Not resting on its laurels, NiMet is striving to extend this certification to an additional ten airports across the country. This effort will facilitate the provision of standardized and accurate meteorological services to a wider range of stakeholders.

In addition to the ISO 9001:2015 recertification, NiMet has also achieved recertification for ISO 29990:2010, which focuses on capacity building and training. The agency operates two training institutes, namely the Regional Training Centre (RTC) in Lagos and the Muhammadu Buhari Meteorological Institute of Science and Technology (MBMIST) in Katsina. These institutions are instrumental in equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills in meteorology and applied meteorology, including the study of climate change.

Notably, NiMet is the first meteorological agency in Africa to acquire the ISO certification, highlighting its commitment to excellence and adherence to global standards. The agency's track record of excellence has led to its involvement in auditing and assisting other African countries, including Malawi and Gambia, in their pursuit of ISO certification.

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development have also approached NiMet for guidance and assistance in acquiring ISO certification. This recognition further solidifies NiMet's position as a leading authority in the field of meteorological services.

As NiMet continues to enhance its capabilities and expand its reach, it remains dedicated to providing reliable and accurate meteorological services for the benefit of Nigeria and the wider African region.
