A panel of discussants at the Nigerian Youth Parliament's International Youth Day event has urged stakeholders to consider reviewing Nigeria's technical schools and upgrading the curriculum to meet current realities. The panelists highlighted the impact of emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), on job opportunities and emphasized the need for the educational system to adapt.
The event, themed "Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development: Unlocking Potentials, Driving Changes," concluded with a conference where the panelists shared their insights on the importance of empowering young people with technical skills. They stressed the necessity of providing teachers in basic education with continuous training and capacity-building programs to ensure they can effectively impart these skills to students.
AI technology has revolutionized many industries, resulting in the automation of various tasks previously performed by humans. The panelists noted that this rapid transformation necessitates a review of technical schools' curriculum to ensure it aligns with the demands of the modern workforce.
Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Youths in Parliament, delivered the keynote address during the event. Alao-Akala urged young people to take up grassroots mobilization and increase awareness among their communities regarding their roles in politics and government. He emphasized that engaging youth at the local level is vital for inclusive governance.
During the conference, Mr. Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, presented cheques to the winners of the #NigeriaWeWant Video Challenge competition. The competition aimed to promote civic engagement and youth participation in shaping Nigeria's future.
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Azeezat Yishawu, expressed gratitude to the partners, including International Alert, EU, Leap Africa, Nigerian Youth Futures Fund, PeacefulSky Travels and Tours, and all the special guests, panelists, and participants who contributed to the success of the event.
Yishawu also pledged that the Nigeria Youth Parliament would commit to adopt and forward the conference's recommendations to relevant government institutions and stakeholders.
As the world continues to rapidly evolve, it is essential for educational institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders to proactively review and update educational curriculums to ensure they equip young people with the skills needed to thrive in the digital age.
