Lagos State Building Control Agency Commences Removal of Distressed Structures

The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has swung into action to address the issue of building collapse in Lagos Island, Mushin, and surrounding areas. The agency is determined to prevent avoidable loss of lives and properties by removing distressed structures and ensuring that all buildings are fit for habitation.

Under the supervision of the General Manager of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, the agency has identified specific buildings that pose a potential risk and has taken the necessary steps to evacuate occupants and commence partial demolition to push for relocation.

Arc. Oki emphasized that the agency's mandate is to bring down to the barest minimum the occurrence of collapsed buildings and prevent the loss of lives in Lagos. The evacuation and demolition exercise is a last resort before the final demolition of the affected structures.

Prior to the evacuation exercise, the LASBCA had already marked the buildings as unfit for habitation and issued evacuation notices to the occupants. The agency also advised the landlords to carry out integrity tests to assess the structural stability of the buildings.

Mr. Rabiu Jamiu, a resident of one of the affected buildings in the Oke-Arin area, acknowledged that the officials of LASBCA had previously served an evacuation notice to the occupants. He expressed his understanding of the government's move, stating that it is for the safety of all.

The LASBCA has also taken action against other non-compliant structures in the Mushin area. A warehouse under construction was sealed for failing to obtain necessary approvals, and a building under renovation along Palm Avenue was also found to be in violation of required approval processes.

Arc. Oki assured Lagosians that the LASBCA remains committed to its vision and goal of ensuring that all buildings in the state are habitable and pose no risk to nearby structures. The agency will continue carrying out inspections and monitoring exercises to identify distressed buildings and take appropriate action.

The administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is determined to ensure the safety of residents and reduce the occurrence of building collapses. It is vital for Lagosians to prioritize their safety and not solely rely on the government for protection.
