The collaboration is a significant milestone towards strengthening ties and promoting legitimate trade within the West African region.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Customs Service of the Republic of Benin are in collaboration talks to enhance trade relations and customs administration between both countries.

The Acting Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi, announced this during a two-day working visit of the Director-General of Customs, Republic of Benin, Alain Hinkati, to Nigeria.

This collaboration is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regional cooperation and trade facilitation within the West African region.

In his address, Adeniyi highlighted the progress made since the previous visit to Benin and expressed the commitment to solidify these gains.

He stated, "Our objective remains steadfast; to stimulate economic growth, foster regional integration, and nurture prosperity among our nations."

The NCS has undertaken substantial measures to reduce barriers along trade corridors by collaborating with the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police.

This collaboration aims to create a more conducive environment for legitimate trade.

Efforts are also being made to integrate the NCS IT systems with the Federal Road Safety to enhance monitoring and regulation of cross-border vehicle movements.

Adeniyi also mentioned the launch of initiatives to harmonize the list of products prohibited in Nigeria.

This step promotes consistency and facilitates smoother trade relations with partners.

The NCS is also progressing towards Nigeria's integration into the Interconnected System for the Management of Goods in Transit (SIGMAT), along with other West African nations.

This system promises to streamline transit operations and improve regional trade dynamics.

While acknowledging the achievements and dedication in collaboration with regional partners, Adeniyi emphasized the need for continued commitment and resolve to overcome challenges.

The Director-General of Customs, Republic of Benin, Alain Hikanti, commended the NCS for its efforts in forging collaboration and expressed the mutual benefits this collaboration would bring.

He revealed plans to establish a clearing ground in the Republic of Benin for easier importation of goods through their borders.

The visit solidified the foundations for strengthening ties and enhancing trade relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

The Nigeria Customs Service, through these collaborative efforts, aims to foster economic growth, regional integration, and promote legitimate trade within the West African region.
