MAKURDI – Stakeholders in flooding communities of Benue State have called on the Federal Government to, in collaboration with the Benue State Government build embankments along River Benue to mitigate the impact of flooding in affected communities in the state

They argued that in other parts of the world, embankments are created at river banks to control the negative effect that water may have on communities and also check incessant floodings, adding that when this is done in Benue, it would put paid to incidents of flooding in Benue

The stakeholders disclosed this during the 2023 Stakeholders’ meeting on flood mitigation and other related issues held in Makurdi, the Benue state capital on Wednesday

The meeting which was organized by the Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) was to listen to stakeholders in the state and evolve ways of putting an end to the incessant flooding in the state

On the other hand, they appealed to the government to build dams in flood-prone areas to harness the water for the greater benefit of the affected communities including the benefits of being used for irrigation purposes

Some of the stakeholders who pointed out that the lack of drainages in affected communities has not helped matters urged the federal and state governments to prevail on house owners to build drainages around their houses

On the issue of relocating victims of flood from flooding communities, the stakeholders said since most of the victims were poor, the state and federal governments should assist the victims in relocating to high and safer ground

Equally important, they said was the need to sensitize the people of the state on proper waste disposal which is a major challenge faced in the affected communities

The stakeholders further pledged to cooperate with HYPPADEC and other line agencies and assist in the sensitization of the people on issues that would mitigate flooding in their various communities

The meeting had in attendance traditional rulers, community heads, relevant federal and state government agencies and staff of HYPPADEC among other groups.
