In a bid to maintain an efficient healthcare system, the Federal Government proposed a new Public Service Rules (PSR) that includes retirement for public servants who have been in a position for eight years, including medical doctors of directorate cadre and above. This proposal has raised concerns among medical professionals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), leading to a meeting between the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, and medical union representatives.
The Minister, represented by the minister of state for FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, assured the medical unions that the retirement issue would be carefully evaluated and addressed with a "human face." Wike explained that the proposed retirement plan affects not only the medical sector but also some other sectors.
Highlighting the importance of medical services and the need to strengthen them in all hospitals within the FCT, Wike stated, "We have a guideline that exempted the medical doctors from the circular, so we need to have a backup document to speak on the matter. I will have to meet with the heads of departments, stakeholders, and other sectors concerning recalling the letter, and I assure you that we will do our best and come out with something good."
The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter, Ugwuanyi Charles, urged the Minister to carefully consider the impact of removing hospital consultants due to the retirement policy. He expressed concern that the removal of experienced consultants would affect the availability of medical services and potentially lead to burnout within hospitals.
In addition, the Chairman of the Medical and Dental Council Association of Nigeria (MD-CAN) FCTA chapter, Musa Emmanuel, argued that the retirement was not carried out following the proper rules and guidelines. He suggested that the decision might have been made by individuals who either lacked knowledge of the rules or deliberately ignored them.
As the administrations works towards finding a solution and addressing the retirement issue, it is essential to prioritize the continued delivery of quality medical services to the people of the FCT. The collaboration between stakeholders, medical professionals, and the government is crucial to ensure a sustainable healthcare system that benefits both patients and doctors.
