Airbus Expands Capacity with New Hangar for A321XLR Production
Airbus has officially opened a new automated hangar in Hamburg, Germany, to support the production of A321XLR aircraft. The hangar will facilitate the installation and mounting of rear fuselages for the A321XLR, as well as testing and transfer to the final assembly line. This expansion is part of Airbus' efforts to modernize and digitalize its industrial system and accommodate the increasing demand in the A320 program.

The latest development in this endeavor is the opening of a new automated hangar in Hamburg, Germany, dedicated to the manufacturing of A321XLR aircraft. This expansion comes as Airbus aims to ramp up the production rate of the popular A320 program, targeting 75 aircraft by the year 2026.

The inauguration of the new hangar was attended by Hamburg's First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher, and German Aerospace Coordinator, Anna Christmann. André Walter, Head of Airbus Commercial Aircraft Production in Germany, emphasized the significance of the Hamburg site in the production of the A321XLR. He stated that the new hangar would increase the capacity for manufacturing A321 fuselages and contribute to supporting the ramp-up.

Dr. Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, highlighted the importance of Airbus' presence in the region. Hamburg serves as a central location for the development and production of single-aisle aircraft, including the flagship A321XLR. With its enhanced sustainability, efficiency, and range, the A321XLR represents a significant step forward.

The equipment installation hangar, identified as H259, spans an impressive 9,600 square meters of production space. It is dedicated to the installation and mounting of all components of the rear fuselages for the A321XLR aircraft. The hangar boasts state-of-the-art technologies, including automated logistics, fully digital systems, and test stations capable of providing real-time updates on fuselage status.

Each fuselage section, measuring almost 24 meters in length, undergoes extensive testing immediately after the installation of electrical, mechanical, and other systems. The tested sections are then transferred to the final assembly line in Hamburg.

Throughout the planning and construction of the hangar, employee consultation was a priority to ensure an efficient production flow and a modern working environment. The ergonomic design aims to optimize cooperation among production staff and supporting functions.

In terms of sustainability, the hangar was carefully planned and built. A photovoltaic system on the roof, spanning 3,000 square meters, provides electricity for the hangar, with surplus power supporting the entire site. The office block's insulation, in combination with a fully automatic control system, further minimizes energy consumption.

This investment by Airbus signals a commitment to sustainable aviation and the acceleration of progress towards climate-neutral aviation. By expanding its capacity and streamlining production processes, Airbus is positioning itself as a trailblazer in the aerospace industry.
