The wife of Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has condemned the killing of Deborah Atanda, a female student of Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), demanding Justice for her death.
Oyebanji expressed her shock and heartbreak over the untimely demise of the promising 200 level student of the Department of Nursing, FUOYE. In a statement released by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, she described the killing as an act of sheer wickedness, shocking in its brutality, heartrending to the core, and absolutely condemnable.
"Such acts of violence have no place in a civilised academic community where future leaders are nurtured," said Oyebanji.
She emphasized that a university should serve as an environment for academic pursuits and the exchange of ideas, and should never become a site of tragedy where the destinies of the next generation leaders are cut short. She empathized with the family of the deceased and the university community that is mourning the loss of a promising student.
"As a mother, I share with the family the agonizing pain of losing such a daughter with a promising and bright future," Oyebanji said.
She further extended her heartfelt condolences to the parents of the slain student, praying that God would grant them the strength and fortitude to bear the immense loss of their precious daughter.
Oyebanji called on security operatives to exert every possible human effort to identify and bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice.
"Only the grace of Almighty God can provide solace to heal the broken hearts of the grieving family," she concluded.
This tragic incident has shocked the entire community and highlights the urgent need for increased security measures on university campuses. It is a call to action for authorities to prioritize the safety and well-being of students.
The murder of a young, promising student is a loss not only for her family but also for the entire nation. It signifies the loss of a potential future leader and disrupts the dreams and aspirations that Deborah Atanda had.
It is essential for the government and educational institutions to work hand in hand to ensure the safety of students on campus. Measures such as the provision of adequate security personnel, the installation of surveillance cameras, and the implementation of stricter access control policies should be considered.
Furthermore, there is a need for increased awareness and education on campus security, including self-defense training and the promotion of a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
The tragic loss of Deborah Atanda should serve as a wake-up call to all stakeholders in the education sector. Justice must be served, and preventive measures must be put in place to prevent future incidents of this nature. No student should fear for their life while pursuing their dreams and aspirations.
As the nation mourns the loss of a bright young mind, it is our responsibility to ensure that Deborah's death is not in vain. Let her memory be a catalyst for change, leading to safer campuses and a society free from violence.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Deborah Atanda during this incredibly difficult time.
