Improving Security and Sanitation in Abuja: Minister Nyesom Wike Outlines Priorities

Addressing the press on Tuesday, Minister Nyesom Wike unveiled his key focus areas in Abuja during the initial six months of his tenure. Enhancing security and sanitation are his topmost priorities as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Wike particularly stressed the need to address the issue of functional street lights in the city. Adequate lighting plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of residents and visitors alike. Without it, the streets of Abuja become potential breeding grounds for criminal activities. By committing to improve the street lighting infrastructure, Wike aims to promote a safe and secure environment for everyone.

Another pressing concern on Wike's agenda is the eradication of illegal motor parks across Abuja. These unauthorized motor parks not only contribute to traffic congestion but also create opportunities for lawlessness and disorder. Furthermore, Wike intends to ensure that ongoing projects in the Federal Capital Territory are not abandoned. He made it clear that his administration will not tolerate such negligence. Emphasizing his commitment to efficiency and timely delivery, the minister stated that projects without appropriate funding would not be initiated in the first place. This approach reflects Wike's determination to prioritize projects with clear financial backing and execute them within reasonable timelines.

"I don't do anything called abandoned project. I'm not a party to an abandoned project. Any project that has no cash backing will not be awarded. There must be money and I know that money has been provided for this project. And I don't do a project that will take me more than one year," Wike asserted.

Wike's call for accountability extends beyond project execution. He urged members of the FCT administration staff to fully align with his leadership's goals and objectives. For those who feel they may struggle to meet the high expectations, Wike offered an alternative—voluntarily seeking reassignment to other positions. Notably, Wike expressed his strong stance on demolitions and cracking down on illegal activities. He emphasized that illegality would not be tolerated and called for decisive action to be taken promptly. Wike pointed out the rampant presence of unauthorized Keke NAPEP (commercial tricycles) in the city's central areas, such as Maitama and Asokoro. This violation of regulations concerning helmet usage and the entry of certain vehicles into the city showcases the need for tighter regulations and enforcement.

While Wike's plans for enhancing security and sanitation in Abuja call for extensive measures, he received assurances of support and loyalty from Olusade Adesola, the FCDA permanent secretary. Adesola emphasized the dedication and loyalty of the FCT administration staff, positioning them as partners in progress and custodians of the dreams of the city's founding fathers.
