Abuja, Aug. 27, 2023 - In a major operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) successfully thwarted an illicit drug export endeavor by a 29-year-old South African citizen, Erasmus Jean-Pierre, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Aug. 23.
According to Mr. Femi Babafemi, the Director of NDLEA's Media and Advocacy, Jean-Pierre had ingeniously concealed 2.6kg of methamphetamine within his luggage as he attempted to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight destined for the Middle East.
This incident was part of a larger chain of events that unfolded over the course of a few days. Jean-Pierre first arrived in Lagos from Abidjan on Saturday, Aug. 19, and subsequently traveled to Abuja on Tuesday, Aug. 22. It was on Wednesday, Aug. 23, that he took possession of the drug-laden brown bag before proceeding to the Abuja airport for his departure from Nigeria.
In an impressive display of their relentless pursuit against drug trafficking, the NDLEA also made several other significant seizures and apprehensions.
Just a day after thwarting Jean-Pierre's export attempt, NDLEA operatives apprehended Esazobor Ohioze, a 33-year-old man, in the Uzebba Forest of Owan West local government area in Edo state on Aug. 24. Ohioze was found in possession of a staggering 54.3kg of Indian hemp. During this operation, the NDLEA successfully eradicated three hectares of illegal cannabis plantation from the forest.
In yet another operation, the NDLEA agents intercepted the efforts of a transnational drug cartel attempting to smuggle 117g of Ketamine. This dangerous drug was cleverly hidden within a pair of leather slippers and destined for Indonesia. Thanks to the vigilance and expertise of the NDLEA, this smuggling attempt was promptly foiled.
Highlighting the agency's ongoing commitment and dedication to its mission, the spokesperson further added that NDLEA operatives connected to a courier company in Lagos recently intercepted 2.14kg of skunk. The illicit drug, concealed within the walls of a local wooden drum, serves as another testament to the agency's unyielding efforts to combat drug trafficking and ensure the safety of the nation and its citizens.
The NDLEA's impressive operations serve as a stark reminder of the prevalence and persistence of drug trafficking in today's society. These incidents not only reveal the creativity of traffickers in concealing illicit substances but also emphasize the critical role played by law enforcement agencies in curbing drug-related activities.
The NDLEA should be commended for their vigilance and unwavering commitment to protecting the society from the devastating impact of drugs. Their efforts to disrupt the drug trade, apprehend offenders, and eradicate illegal drug plantations are vital in safeguarding public health and security.
It is crucial for citizens to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities, and support the efforts of the NDLEA in creating a drug-free society. By working together, we can combat drug trafficking, protect our communities, and ensure a safer future for all.
