Abuja - The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate arrest of the landlord of a two-storey building that recently collapsed in Lagos Crescent, located in the Garki 2 area of Abuja. The building collapse occurred amid concerns over its dilapidated state and lack of planning approval. Wike's order comes as part of a broader response aimed at safeguarding residents and preventing similar incidents.
During an on-site assessment of the collapsed building, Wike stressed the importance of proper planning and resettlement. He questioned why it had taken so long for the FCTA (Federal Capital Territory Administration) to address the resettlement of affected residents and expressed his determination to take immediate action. The minister firmly believes that planned cities can mitigate against such tragedies and ensure the safety of citizens.
Wike strongly urged the identification and subsequent arrest of the building's owner, sending a clear message that accountability must be upheld. He also emphasized the need for government intervention in the affected area, which will inevitably lead to a halt in further development. While acknowledging potential discomfort caused by governmental decisions, Wike assured stakeholders that the measures taken are ultimately for the greater good of the people.
The Federal Capital Territory Minister commended the ongoing rescue efforts by various agencies, including NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) and FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), which resulted in the rescue of 37 lives. Sadly, two lives were lost in the incident. Wike, therefore, appealed to the Permanent Secretary to ensure that funds are promptly raised to cover the hospital bills of those rescued.
In addition, Tpl Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of the Department of Development Control at FCTA, revealed that the ill-fated building was located within the Garki indigenous settlement. The structure consisted of two suspended floors, with one utilized for commercial activities and the others serving as residential accommodation. The absence of planning approval for the building highlighted the lack of adherence to established codes in the area.
Resident complaints about the deteriorating state of the building fell on deaf ears, despite being communicated to the landlord and his lawyer. The affected residents further placed blame on government agencies for failing to conduct integrity tests or inspection of the structure, considering its prime location and the significant population density surrounding it.
Rescue operations are currently ongoing, with an undisclosed number of fatalities reported. Several individuals are receiving treatment at local hospitals, while some victims' injuries are described as severe. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of proper urban planning, inspection, and regulation to ensure public safety.
