In an unequivocal statement, former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN), declared that he does not need a title to serve in the President Bola Tinubu-led administration. Fashola, a close ally of Tinubu, spoke during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday at the Lagos State University, Ojo.
Emphasizing the importance of active citizenship, Fashola stated, "I do not need a title to serve, the president can only appoint at least one minister, for example, from each state in which he has done that. There are just enough places in parastatals; they are doing that."
As Nigeria experiences a population surge, with an estimated population of 200 million, Fashola stressed the need for every citizen to play their role in advancing the nation. He highlighted that the biggest title one can have is being a responsible citizen.
Fashola, who previously served as the Chief of Staff to Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor, recognized the significance of nurturing the next generation of leaders. He expressed his desire to see more youthful individuals actively participating and holding meaningful positions within the administration.
While some argue that political titles are necessary for influence and wield power, Fashola's stance challenges this perspective. He believes that public-spirited individuals should focus on making meaningful contributions to public service rather than seeking positions primarily for prestige or personal gain.
Highlighting the current shortage of available offices and seats in government, Fashola advocated for a system that prioritizes merit and the inclusion of outstanding citizens who can drive positive change. He urged like-minded individuals to step forward and take up these spaces.
The former Lagos State Governor's position aligns with the vision of a more inclusive and progressive Nigeria, where public service is not restricted to formal titles or positions, but rather a collective effort by citizens to contribute to the nation's growth.
As political discussions heat up ahead of the next election cycle, Fashola's perspective serves as a reminder that true leadership goes beyond titles. It calls for individuals who are willing to selflessly serve the nation and prioritize the interests of Nigerians above personal ambitions.
While the future shape of the Tinubu-led administration remains uncertain, Fashola's stance serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to Nigeria's progress.
