Investigation Commences on United Nigeria Airlines Plane Incident at Lagos Airport

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into an incident involving a United Nigeria Airlines plane at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The incident occurred on Friday, September 8, 2023, at around 6:33 pm when an Embraer ERJ145 aircraft with registration number 5N-BWY skidded off runway 18R.

According to the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NSIB, Tunji Oketunbi, the aircraft was en route from Abuja to Lagos with 51 passengers and four crew members on board. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities reported.

The NSIB is calling on the general public to provide any pictures, videos, or recording evidence that can assist in the comprehensive investigation. The bureau has released contact information including their email address, social media platforms, and an emergency line for any relevant information.

This is not the first time United Nigeria Airlines has experienced a runway incident. On May 31, 2023, a plane operated by the airline skidded off runway 18L at the Murtala Mohammed Airport 2 in Lagos. The incident involved a flight from Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, with 50 passengers on board.

The recurring runway incidents raise concerns about the airline's safety protocols and maintenance practices. It is crucial for the NSIB investigation to uncover the root causes of these incidents to ensure appropriate measures are taken to prevent future occurrences.
