Nigeria Customs Service Generates N540 Billion Revenue from Apapa Command in Seven Months
The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that it generated a record-breaking revenue of N540 billion from January to July 2023. The collection is attributed to the prevention of leakages, zero compromise on duty evasion, and due diligence. The newly promoted Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Mohammed Auwal, expressed appreciation to the officers and stakeholders for their support. He also emphasized the importance of compliance in ensuring port efficiency and urged importers, agents, and freight forwarders to make sincere declarations and avoid smuggling.

Lagos, Nigeria - The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has reported an impressive revenue collection of N540,431,401,641 between January and July 2023. This landmark achievement was revealed by Assistant Comptroller-General of Customs, Mohammed Auwal, during a farewell session with senior officers of the command.

The revenue collection, according to ACG Mohammed, was a direct result of the command's commitment to preventing leakages, eliminating compromise on duty evasion, and ensuring due diligence. Despite the reduced volume of trade, the Apapa Command successfully collected this substantial amount, setting a new record in revenue generation.

ACG Mohammed extended his appreciation to the officers and stakeholders for their unrelenting support throughout his tenure as Customs Area Controller. He particularly acknowledged the assistance rendered by various parties, which included the prompt recovery of identified shortfalls in revenue through Demand Notices.

July 2023 witnessed the highest monthly revenue collection in the history of the Apapa Command, with a total of N119,049,235,263. This achievement surpasses the previous record set in January and August 2022, where N95 billion was collected each month. The command's success in revenue collection can be attributed to enhanced inter-agency synergy and intelligence-sharing, which facilitated the crackdown on criminal activities aimed at smuggling prohibited items such as arms, ammunition, and illicit drugs.

ACG Mohammed underscored the critical role of compliance in ensuring the efficiency of the port. He emphasized that both government and private sector stakeholders have a duty to adhere to the rules governing trade operations and to make sincere declarations. By doing so, they contribute to the prevention of smuggling and the creation of a seamless cargo movement at the Apapa port.

With its strategic location and immense potential, the Apapa port has the capacity to become the primary trade hub for West and Central Africa. However, achieving this status requires the collective efforts of importers, agents, and freight forwarders to uphold compliance and legitimate trade practices.

The farewell session concluded with the decoration of ACG Mohammed with his new rank by the Acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR in Abuja on July 31, 2023.
