INEC Chairman Reviews 2023 General Elections with State Administrative Secretaries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a proactive step towards improving the electoral process in Nigeria. The chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, recently met with state administrative secretaries from across the country to review the 2023 general elections.

During the meeting, Yakubu acknowledged the crucial role played by administrative secretaries in the successful implementation of policies during elections. He expressed appreciation for their dedication and commitment to their responsibilities. However, he also highlighted the need for rededication, commitment, improvement, and, where necessary, sanctions on erring officials.

The primary objective of the meeting was to review the administration of the 2023 general elections at the state level. Yakubu emphasized the importance of prompt commencement of polls at the appointed hour, efficient service at polling units, management of new technologies, and security of facilities and personnel.

Logistics emerged as a critical factor in the prompt commencement of polls. Yakubu urged the administrative secretaries to assess whether there were obstacles to the full implementation of logistical arrangements. He questioned the availability of sufficient vehicles and buses for road and maritime transportation and stressed the activation of the Registration Area Centers (RACs) and super RACs to ensure timely deployment of materials to polling units.

The chairman also stressed the importance of well-trained officials, both regular staff and ad hoc members, in providing prompt and efficient service at polling units. He urged administrative secretaries to identify issues that hinder staff efficiency on election day. This could involve problems with staff deployment or other related challenges.

Managing new technologies posed its own set of challenges during the 2023 general elections. Yakubu called for an assessment of the concerns encountered during processes such as voter registration, distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVC), redistribution of voters to polling units, media accreditation, and the accreditation of polling and collection agents.

Lastly, the INEC chairman emphasized the importance of security for both facilities and personnel. He sought feedback on the experiences encountered in the field, urging administrative secretaries to suggest additional measures that could be taken to enhance security.

In conclusion, Yakubu urged the administrative secretaries to openly discuss issues identified from the agenda and beyond. Transparent discussions would help address challenges faced in the field, allowing for the consolidation of gains made in the last elections. By critically reviewing the electoral process, identifying weaknesses, and formulating actionable recommendations, INEC aims to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of future elections.
