The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, has provided palliatives to approximately 200 poultry farmers who were adversely affected by the 2022 flood disaster. The distribution of the palliatives took place at the National Cereal Research Institute, Moor Plantation, Ibadan.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, expressed the government's recognition of the significant role played by poultry farmers in the state's and Nigeria's economic development. While acknowledging that the palliatives could not fully compensate for their losses, he emphasized that it was a gesture to demonstrate the government's appreciation for their contribution.
Barrister Olaleye commended the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Oyo State chapter, for their crucial roles in improving nutrition, economic growth, and the livelihood of the state's residents. He also announced the government's intention to partner with stakeholders and investors to establish egg power making factories. This initiative aims to enhance egg production throughout the year and ensure the availability of high-quality eggs.
However, the Commissioner highlighted the need for accurate and authentic data regarding poultry production in the state. He urged the Poultry Association to collaborate with the State Ministry of Agriculture in providing precise information. Accurate data will facilitate the authentication of their members and enable the government to make informed decisions and offer better support.
The State Coordinator for the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Mrs. Kakulu Florence, explained that the palliatives were intended to alleviate the impact of the 2022 flood on poultry farmers. She expressed sympathy for the farmers who may have suffered losses and appreciated the government's efforts to mitigate their challenges.
The palliatives distributed to each beneficiary included eight bags of poultry feed, crates, and financial support for logistics. Dr. Kakulu emphasized the importance of accurate data provision by the Poultry Association to improve government interventions.
In response, the Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Oyo State chapter, Elder Omidokun Oyekunle, expressed appreciation to the government for providing assistance to their members. He called on the federal government to release grains from the Nation's reserves to address the unavailability of maize, a vital component of poultry feed.
The beneficiaries, Mr. Samson Feyisetan and Mrs. Bakare Rofiat, expressed gratitude for the palliatives. They acknowledged the challenges of rising feed prices and declared that the assistance would ease the burden of feeding their chickens.
The distribution of palliatives to poultry farmers affected by the flood disaster reflects the Oyo State Government's commitment to supporting the agricultural sector. By recognizing the importance of farmers and providing essential assistance, the government strives to ensure sustainable agricultural practices and stimulate economic growth.
