FCTA to Provide Transportation and Food Supplies Support with N5 Billion Palliative

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, Mr Nyesom Wike, has revealed that the FCT Administration (FCTA) is considering utilizing the N5 billion palliative received from the Federal Government to provide transportation and food supplies support to the residents of Abuja.

Wike made this disclosure shortly after a closed-door meeting with contractors managing various projects in the FCT. The Federal Government had previously announced a N5 billion palliative for each state, including the FCT, to alleviate the impact of the petrol subsidy removal.

It is noteworthy that some state governments have already confirmed receiving N2 billion from the palliative amount, while awaiting the remaining N3 billion. The FCT, however, was not initially included in the N5 billion palliative until the Minister wrote a memo conveying the situation to President Bola Tinubu.

Fortunately, the President subsequently approved the amount, and Wike expressed confidence that the FCT would soon receive its allocation.

Regarding the utilization of the N2 billion palliative, Wike stated that no decision has been made yet. However, he highlighted two essential areas that are currently being considered. "We have not chosen any area yet. Are we going to concentrate on food? But we are thinking that the issue of transportation is very, very important, particularly the urban mass transit," he said.

Wike further emphasized the significance of providing easy transportation options for the residents of the FCT, stating that simply providing food might not address their long-term needs. "People would like to have easy transportation to go to where they want to go, and if you give them rice and they eat the rice today, what about transportation tomorrow?" he questioned.

The Minister highlighted that efforts are already underway to revitalize urban mass transportation in order to alleviate the suffering of the masses in terms of transportation.

Access to reliable and affordable transportation is a crucial factor in enhancing the quality of life for the residents of any city. The FCTA's focus on transportation support reflects an understanding of the importance of this aspect in daily life and economic productivity.
