Nigerian Air Force Commended for Efforts in Curbing Small Arms and Light Weapons
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received commendation for its dedicated efforts in curbing the influx and proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country. The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) praised the NAF for its commitment in assisting with transportation, storage, and security of seized weapons. The NAF's collaboration, synergy, and proactive intelligence gathering were also appreciated. Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar expressed his delight at the Centre's establishment and commended its database establishment for legitimate and illegitimate arms.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been commended for its efforts and commitment towards checkmating the influx and proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country. The commendation came from the National Coordinator of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), Major General Abba Dikko (Rtd), during his visit to NAF Headquarters.

In a press statement signed by Edward Gabkwet Air Commodore, Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF, it was emphasized that the NAF has been providing valuable assistance to the Centre in several ways. The NAF has been actively involved in the transportation, storage, and security of seized weapons. These efforts have significantly eased the burden of work for the Centre.

During the visit, Major General Dikko highlighted the commitment and diligence of the NAF in assisting the Centre in ridding the nation of small arms and light weapons. He praised the NAF for its airlifts, robust collaborative efforts, mutual synergy, and proactive intelligence gathering. Major General Dikko stressed that such efforts are incomparable and deserve appreciation.

Furthermore, Major General Dikko appealed to Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), to use his influence in the passage of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Bill 2023, which is currently before the Senate of the National Assembly. The passage of this bill would further strengthen the efforts to control the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria.

In response, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar expressed his satisfaction with the collaborative working relationship between the NAF and the Centre since its establishment in May 2021. He acknowledged the direct correlation between the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and the heightened levels of insecurity in the country. Hence, the establishment of the Centre was considered apt and timely.

The Chief of the Air Staff commended the Centre for its efforts in curbing the illegal spread and flow of arms and other weapons within Nigeria. He stated, "Any effort at controlling the proliferation of small arms and light weapons is certainly a welcome development to everyone seeking a prosperous and peaceful Nigeria."

Air Marshal Abubakar also lauded the Coordinator for the establishment of a comprehensive database for tracking legitimate and illegitimate arms in the country. This database will greatly assist security agencies and the Federal Government in making informed decisions regarding weapons and ammunition management.

Assuring his continued support, Air Marshal Abubakar promised that the NAF would continue to assist the Centre in fulfilling its mandate of curbing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria.
