The Ondo State Security Network Agency, commonly referred to as Amotekun Corps, has demonstrated its commitment to maintaining discipline within its ranks by dismissing four officers who violated the agency's guidelines, according to Commander Adetunji Adeleye.
Speaking to reporters in Akure, Adeleye stressed the agency's zero tolerance for indiscipline. He stated, "The corps has taken strong action against officers who breached our codes. We have dismissed four, while others are currently undergoing corrective measures to ensure their adherence to our operational standards."
Since its establishment two years ago, the Amotekun Corps has made significant strides in combating crime in Ondo State. The agency has reportedly apprehended approximately 7,000 suspected criminals during this period, with 1,500 individuals formally charged in court.
Adeleye acknowledged the crucial support provided by the Army, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS), particularly commending the DSS for its role in providing geo-location data for kidnap cases.
"With the support of other security agencies, we have been able to arrest over 7,000 suspected criminals," Adeleye emphasized. "About 1,500 of them have been prosecuted, and many have already faced judgment. To expedite the judicial process, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has authorized the construction of two additional courts for swift justice."
The efforts of the Amotekun Corps have also significantly contributed to resolving the long-standing conflicts between farmers and herdsmen in the state. According to Adeleye, these crises have witnessed a tremendous decrease of over 95% in the past two years.
"To promote understanding of their rights and responsibilities, we initiated extensive public enlightenment campaigns targeting both farmers and herdsmen," Adeleye revealed. "Subsequently, we engaged representatives of Miyetti Allah to clarify our position, and strict enforcement commenced after a stipulated deadline."
The implementation of these initiatives by the Amotekun Corps has played a fundamental role in restoring peace and security to the region. As a result, residents' confidence has soared, positively impacting their livelihoods.
In a parallel development, the passing of David Akinremi, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps in Ogun State, has dealt a significant blow to the region's security efforts. The retired Commissioner of Police succumbed to an undisclosed illness on Monday, June 26, 2023.
Akinremi, who was appointed as the pioneer Commander of the Amotekun Corps in Ogun State in 2021, actively collaborated with other security agencies to combat crime and ensure the state's security.
Commander Soji Ganzallo of the So-Safe Corps confirmed Akinremi's demise, expressing deep sorrow and describing the news as "a rude shock."
The untimely passing of David Akinremi leaves a void in the security landscape of Ogun State. The government and relevant security agencies must now make concerted efforts to find a worthy successor who can continue his legacy of enhancing security and protecting the region's residents.
